Why we support CACR25

CACR25 is not a normal bill. It’s a proposed amendment to the NH constitution to establish marriage as a fundamental civil right. With national attacks on marriage equality, it’s essential to enshrine this at the state level.

There are many reasons to support an amendment like this to the NH Constitution, but our primary reasons are as follows:

After the Dobbs decision, we’ve seen how federal law can change the local landscape with devastating consequences.

With the SCOTUS ruling on Dobbs, we have seen a major roll back of abortion access across the country, and particularly in our own state. Despite promises made by legislators, new bills have been introduced each legislative session to restrict healthcare and make abortion less and less accessible. These same tactics can be used against other progressive measures.

We are already witnessing challenges to Obergefell which ruled marriage equality as the law of the land at the Federal level.

Although these attacks have yet to be successful, we know that those who want to see a return to a time before marriage equality will continue to challenge the issue at every level of government.

Enshrining existing rights for marriage equality into the state constitution at the state level will protect other family law-related rights for gay couples.

Overturning Obergefell would have devastating consequences for all areas of family law - and that’s why we should be proactive about this by supporting CACR25. Think about same-sex adoptions, birth certificates issued to same-sex couples with one birthing parent and one non-birthing parent, and other further-reaching consequences.

This is popular police, anticipating a real need in the Granite State.

This pro-active approach is supported by 80% of NH voters already. Lend your voice!
